WaterRower Ash S4 Monitor Rowing Machine
WaterRower Ash S4: Handcrafted solid ash wood frame that doubles as elegant furniture while delivering a smooth, whisper-quiet water resistance rowing experienc
The WaterRower Ash S4 traces its lineage to a rowing machine designed in the mid-80s by Yale and US National Team rower John Duke. It is still hand-built in Rhode Island today. The timber comes from sustainably managed hardwood forests in the Appalachia. There is no veneer here. This is solid ash, and it shows in the build quality.
The WaterFlywheel resistance system uses actual water to create drag. Pull harder and the resistance increases naturally, just like a real boat. The S4 monitor tracks distance, time, and stroke rate with enough precision for serious training. The frame supports up to 1,000 pounds, so it handles heavy use without flex. At rest, the machine stands upright to save floor space, though you will need to drain the water tank before moving it up stairs.
The main tradeoff is noise. The water sloshing is satisfying and meditative at steady pace, but it is louder than magnetic rowers during sprints. Assembly takes about an hour, and the water conditioner tablets are required to keep the tank clear. For a machine that doubles as furniture and delivers authentic rowing feel, it justifies the premium.
