U-Turn Audio Orbit Plus Gen 2 Turntable (Walnut)
A beautifully crafted entry-level turntable with a precision gimbal tonearm that delivers audiophile-grade sound without unnecessary complexity.
U-Turn Audio started as a Kickstarter project in 2012, and the Orbit Plus Gen 2 shows why they’ve stuck around. This is a turntable built around simplicity and mechanical precision. The walnut finish gives it a warm, furniture-grade look that doesn’t scream “audiophile gadget.” What matters most here is the grooved acrylic platter. It’s heavier than standard MDF platters, which helps maintain steady speed. The acrylic also reduces static buildup, so your records stay cleaner during playback.
The OA3 gimbal tonearm uses a one-piece magnesium armtube. That material choice keeps the arm rigid and light, which means the Ortofon OM5E cartridge tracks grooves accurately without introducing distortion. The elliptical diamond stylus delivers a balanced soundstage—bass stays tight, highs don’t get harsh. Speed changes between 33 and 45 RPM are manual, done by moving the belt between pulley positions. The seamless silicone belt runs externally, so motor noise stays isolated from the platter. You’ll need to adjust the counterweight and anti-skate out of the box, but the process takes under five minutes.
One honest note: this turntable requires an external phono preamp. Your receiver or powered speakers need a phono input, or you’ll need to buy a separate preamp. The included felt mat works fine, but upgrading to a cork or rubber mat can further reduce static. For $449, the Orbit Plus Gen 2 delivers clean, reliable playback without unnecessary complexity. It’s a turntable that gets out of its own way.
