Pioneer DJ PLX-500 High Torque Turntable with USB
A solid entry-level DJ turntable with high-torque motor and USB recording, but lacks the build quality of its pricier siblings.
Pioneer DJ built its reputation on club-grade gear that withstands nightly abuse. The PLX-1000 is their flagship, but the PLX-500 brings that same direct-drive DNA to a more accessible price point. The key difference is the built-in USB port. You can record your vinyl directly to a computer without external hardware. That matters if you have a crate of rare 45s or want to digitize your collection without a complicated setup.
The high-torque motor starts spinning the platter almost instantly. This matters for beatmatching and scratching, but it also means the speed stays rock-solid during playback. You get three speeds — 33, 45, and 78 RPM — which covers nearly every record ever pressed. The included dust cover is standard, but the S-shaped tonearm tracks records accurately with minimal skipping. The pitch control slider has a wide range, so you can fine-tune tempo for mixing or matching slightly warped records.
The USB recording is straightforward. Plug in the USB cable, open your recording software, and hit play. The turntable outputs a clean line-level signal, so you don’t need a separate preamp. One honest limitation: the PLX-500 lacks the die-cast chassis and adjustable height feet of the pricier PLX-1000. The build is lighter. It works fine for home listening and casual DJing, but it won’t survive a touring schedule. For digitizing vinyl and mixing at home, it hits the sweet spot between price and performance.
